Portable Medical Solutions Slide 18

The main tethered connectivity that is applicable for portable medical devices is USB. The Continua Alliance is a consortium of about 240 companies world-wide that have come together with the understanding that there is a need to create an ecosystem that works together, end-to-end, from the patient’s personal health device to the back end where the health records are stored. In the red circle on this slide, USB is the main interface that the next few slides will discuss. It is actually the IEEE layers that are going to reside on top of the USB protocol layer. Continua does not necessarily develop the new standards, but instead adopts standards off the shelf and adapts them to the healthcare and health delivery industry. As illustrated in this slide, the personal devices communicate via one of the protocols shown to the aggregation managers in the middle. The developer has a choice of a few different protocols; USB, Bluetooth® and ZigBee®. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), will be another option once it is available in the market.
