standards
This slide highlights the applicable standards, of which the primary listing is UL 1436. This new listing category for AVTs references UL 61010, which is the standard that handheld voltage test instruments are listed to. In other words, AVTs meet all the requirements of handheld testers, and more. In addition, the product is also listed to UL 508 for use in industrial control equipment. To address the reliability of the device, all safety functions must meet 61508, the standard for functional safety. Functional safety principles are used when there are electronic devices and it is necessary to ensure that hardware and firmware errors are detected and controlled in a safe way. To establish the level of reliability, Safety Integrity Levels, or SILs are used. All VeriSafe safety functions are certified to SIL 3. Finally, the employee at work standard, NFPA 70E. As mentioned earlier, this is the standard that electrical work practices are based on. Products are not rated to NFPA 70E. However, there is an exciting update coming in the next edition, expected to be published later this summer that is relevant to AVTs. The 2018 NFPA 70E will allow employers and users to choose between either portable testers or installed AVTs, like VeriSafe, when they are verifying the absence of voltage.
