There are two categories to consider when thinking about similar products: voltage testers and voltage indicators. Voltage testers are typically handheld and are used to detect the presence and absence of voltage in equipment. Voltage indicators, on the other hand, are installed devices. They are used to alert or warn when voltage is present, but they do not guarantee the absence of voltage. When compared to the voltage testers, the greatest advantage of an AVT is the ability to test without exposure. There is also a convenience factor – with the tester self-contained and steps automated, the user gets assurance that with an AVT, the complete test is performed exactly as intended every time. In addition, it reduces many aspects of human error, especially since VeriSafe has a very simple user interface that does not require any adjustments or settings to be manipulated once it is installed. Compared to voltage indicators; although both types of devices are installed or permanently mounted, the similarities end there. Voltage indicators light up or move a needle when voltage is detected. However, if the light is not on, there is no way to know if it is because the equipment is de-energized, if it is because the light has burned out, there is a problem with the device, or it’s simply not installed properly. On the other hand, AVTs are designed with these things in mind and have features that make their operation fail safe. Active indications are used (in the case of VeriSafe – a green light) to reliably communicate when the absence of voltage has been verified. In addition, all of the processes and components that go into determining whether that green light goes on are designed with functional safety in mind and meet SIL 3 requirements. In addition, voltage indicators do not meet the new requirements in NFPA 70E or the UL 1436 listing. VeriSafe is not intended to replace the multimeter. There are many cases where handheld voltage tools are required – such as troubleshooting, and that will not go away. The idea is simply to use VeriSafe for a specific task, and to optimize the voltage verification procedure. It is not a threat or in competition to meters.
