what is
The Absence of Voltage Tester (AVT) is a permanently-mounted test device used to verify that a circuit is de-energized prior to opening an electrical enclosure. It will verify the absence of phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground AC and DC voltage. AVTs should have a built-in test circuit that verifies operation on a known voltage source before and after absence of voltage test. The device should also contain provisions to ensure that the tester is properly installed and in direct contact with the circuit at time of testing. It provides active indications and automated test sequences. Absence of Voltage Testers (AVTs) are a new product category that was added to UL 1436 in September 2016.
