The PI33xx Series of Cool-Power ZVS Buck Regulators integrate a proprietary ZVS topology. Comparing a simplified block diagram of a ZVS buck to a conventional buck, as shown here, the ZVS has a clamp switch around the output inductor. Simply enough, this clamp switch enables zero voltage switching. By doing so, there is a reduction in high-side MOSFET or Q1 turn on losses. The gate drive and body diode conduction losses are also reduced.
