RFID Technology and Applications Slide 35

At UHF frequencies, the material the tag is attached to makes a vast difference to the reading performance. All materials will reduce the power of the RF signal to some extent but metals and liquids pose special problems. Metals reflect the signal while liquids absorb the signal taking energy away from the tag on the downlink and absorbing the response. One way to reduce these problems is by specially designing tags for particular materials.
