Another advantage of LF RFID is its well defined read zone which is evident in automotive immobilizer systems. The reading distance from the key to the steering column lock needs to be well defined to avoid reading any other keys on the ring. This technology was first adopted in 1993 and since then it has been adopted by almost all automobile manufacturers. Another application that takes advantage of the well defined reading zone are pay the pump systems which use a keyfob as a credit card. The LF system’s well defined reading zone allows the reader to charge the correct tag without affecting a customer's tag on the other side of the pump.
