System level software and hardware is becoming available to measure at the die level multiple temperature points, multiple voltages on the die itself, the system utilization and clock speed. These new tools allow the designer the ability to change the power system to maximize performance per watt metrics on the fly without causing damage to the processor or system. This allows customers to take advantage of energy savings when a system is not running at 100% performance. The power aware systems can optimize a “load line” of performance per watt consumed; in other words the system will provide increased performance or reduce power consumption at the same performance level. Systems designed in this manner can also power down sections of the system when not in use to reduce or eliminate static leakage current. For example, shutting down an RF section or reducing memory voltages when not needed by clocking  slower or placing the system in memory retention mode and powering it up dynamically when needed. Many possibilities exist and the energy savings can be dramatic.
