As a regulatory and marketing issue, the decision makers on products are demanding more energy efficiency in products. Whether it is a server, a set top box, a new SOC device or chipset for a market application or a cell phone, power is a high priority consideration at the system level today. Going green is not just a global regulatory requirement in many markets. Customers today expect their electronic products, systems and services to do more and draw less power or have extended battery life. In some markets and applications customers want to be able to track performance metrics such as performance consistency, MIPS per watt, or other system level attributes that they are trying to optimize. Many customers want to be able to implement their own specific energy management policy based on what is important to them. If the customer has paid for a complex processor or VLSI device, they want to extract all the performance from the device or system while meeting system standby as well as operating efficiency goals without damaging it within a defined range.
