The in-amp has two stages, one for each of its two jobs. The first stage amplifies the differential signal and the second stage suppresses the common mode signal. There are signal nodes that are in between the two stages. Furthermore, these nodes are not accessible or observable by the user of an integrated in-amp. Depending on the gain setting of the in-amp, the voltage on internal nodes can be larger than the voltage at either the input or output. If the voltages on the internal nodes are more than the part can handle, a function of the power supplies, then problems could occur.
