Laser Diodes for Motion Sensing

There are two methods for motion sensing: trangulation and time of flight (ToF). In triangulation, a laser diode is used as a light source and a detector/image sensor is needed as the sensing element. In the time of flight method, there is no need for an image sensor. Instead, it uses a laser diode (LD) in conjunction with a photo detector (PD), accomplishing the same task by measuring the time it takes for light to travel back and forth. Time of flight is more precise than the triangulation method, and it can be used for longer distances. The part numbers shown on this slide are recommended for the different types of motion sensing applications.
