This slide will discuss the most common wicks, which are sintered powder or mesh. The wick lines the plates on the top and bottom portions of the vapor chamber. When mesh is used, different sized meshes are employed to promote condensation or transport of the liquid, depending on the void size. Columns are used between the plates to give structural support – they can also participate in liquid transport. The plates are sealed around the perimeter and the mesh attached to the plates via diffusion bonding. Sometimes welding or soldering is used, but diffusion bonding provides higher strength and temperature compatibility.
