Why Do Design Engineers Need Models?

Some common design problems engineers face are presented here. Today, design engineers face complex problems that must be solved quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively, so they use simulation tools in concurrence with actual hardware builds. Designers typically begin to simulate the analog/digital portion of their application in the environment of their EDA. As application requirements become more demanding, the need to take account of the thermal effects like self-heating or external temperature variation is front and center. Beyond this, designers need to model the interaction between thermal engineering and the electronics. To achieve these new circuit demands, they need temperature sensors in order to keep their application within the appropriate temperature boundaries. Vishay’s simulation and application models provide the opportunity to do all this within one environment. As stated earlier, Part I of this module series focused on NTC thermistors. In this second part, Vishay addresses temperature-sensing using RTDs in addition to designing automotive EV inverter applications using PTCs, which fulfill the function of inrush current limiters and load dump resistive elements.
