A D-subminiature connector is named for the “D” shape of the connector housing. There are five standard sizes for D-sub connectors (sizes 1-5) and there are several different configurations that can fit within that D shape. The two most common configurations are standard and high-density. The image on this slide illustrates how the connector profile does not change but the number and size of pins do.
