Common Terms

Before diving into the details, some of the terms in this tutorial are defined here. SPICE (simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis) is an analog circuit-solving technique invented in Berkeley. Even in the digital world, it is still widely used in power electronics and is now combined in mixed digital analog simulations with other more recent hardware description languages like VHDL-AMS. Each software constitutes an EDA (electronic design automation) which, in some cases, combines simulation and PCB board manufacturing. Throughout this presentation, Vishay’s NTC thermistors are presented with their electronic models, and for full appreciation of the modeling accuracy, the engineer will describe their operation in applications of temperature control and protection using ON/OFF heating, proportional-integrative-derivative (PID) circuit, or in some instances pulse width modulation (PWM) to simulate the heater switching.
