Soft Termination MLCC Slide 5

When a bending crack occurs, the result is typically an electrical short. This is highly undesirable in the circuit since it can lead to more catastrophic failures such as thermal events. One solution is called “open mode”. An open mode capacitor has reduced inner electrodes so the active area does not extend toward the external termination band. Since the inner electrodes are restricted in length, a bending crack will not cross opposing electrodes and the capacitor will fail open rather than short. One downside to this concept is that it greatly reduces the maximum capacitance in the same package size.
