A thermocouple is a type of sensor used to measure temperature. The thermocouple is made up of two dissimilar metals joined at one end which is the “HOT” junction. A change in temperature creates a small voltage (known as the Seebeck effect) that is used in calculating the temperature. Thermocouples are generally used in extreme temperature environments found in many industrial markets. There are many different types of thermocouples each exhibiting different characteristics over temperature. Again, the MCP9600 will interface directly to standard types: K, J, T, N, S, E, B and R.
