SAM4L Cortex-M4 Low Power Microcontroller Slide 15
The SAM4L has several security features and offers flexible peripherals that can be used for a wide range of tasks. The LC series features a 128-bit AES encryption unit; both capable of encoding and decoding data. It is FIPS197 compliant so it meets the security standards. It is tightly coupled to the infrastracture with DMA as well as input and output buffers to ensure the throughput of the AES controller and achieves a throughput just shy of 9 MB/s. Along with this, the SAM4L has a 32-bit true number generator also meeting the required security standards. This random number generator can be used for securing hashing of key generation and goes hand-in-hand with the onboard CRC checker. All SAM4L are also fitted with a unique serial number. This consists of the unique lot number Microchip uses for the manufacturing as well the die coordinates (x and y) to give a truly unique serial number. There is a wide range of flexible peripherals found on board. The USART is much more than a regular RS232 port. It can be used for both asynchronous and synchronous USART protocols. In addition to RS232, RS422 and RS485, the USART also support infrared (IrDA) and SPI. The parallel capture unit, called PARC, supports 8-bit parallel capture, and can be used to i.e. connect a camera to the SAM4L. Additionally, it is fully integrated with the DMA and the event system too. The Glue logic controller consists of programmable lookup tables. It takes four inputs and gives one output. The output is setup by the user in the lookup table to say which input combinations should give a logical ’1’ output, and which should give ’0’. This is perfect for replacing external transistors and circuitry or to implement custom chip selects or bus functionality.
