ACS Benefits Versus Shunt Solutions for Inverters

In this graph, the PCB footprint of magnetic current sensors versus shunts with increasing current and voltage levels. All in all, the shunt current sensing is attractive and in competition with magnetic sensors when the currents are below 50 A and when low-side sensing is sufficient. When it comes to make an in-phase measurement, and particularly with >100 V and >50 A, the shunt resistors are not appropriate because they need extra isolation components that make their solution more expensive and leads to a bigger PCB footprint.
