This plot illustrates the simplicity of the translator. The purple trace is the step input, the green trace is the direction input and the yellow and red traces are the output currents from phase A and phase B, out of phase by 90 degrees. In sixteenth step mode each rising edge on the step input results in current for each phase which has a magnitude equal to the electrical position of the stator. The direction of the stator is changed with the direction pin which increments or decrements the translator based on the state.
