Optoisolators Slide 14

Optoisolators can be used in many medical applications. One application is an electro-surgery device that uses a relatively small current to generate heat across a tissue. The heat can be used to cut, coagulate, and operate in many different ways on the desired tissue. In order to provide proper electrical isolation between the part of the device that is in contact with the human tissue and the part that is in contact with the power supply, optocouplers can be used to provide the needed reliable and safe isolation. Optoisolators can also be used in trains and in military applications. In a train, data is being transmitted across the cars of the train. Power supplies in the different cars should be electrically isolated for efficiency and safety reasons. Optoisolators can conveniently provide the required level of isolation. In tanks, many power supplies are available in different parts of the tank. Proper isolation is essential and can be conveniently provided by Commercial Off The Shelf, or COTS, Plus optoisolators.
