MSP430x2xx/4xx and Wireless Overview Slide 10

The groundbreaking MSP430F47x4, the next generation of high performance F4xx MSP430 devices, is a revolutionary device pushing the limits of integration. This page and the following couple of pages will highlight some of the key features of these new devices. First of all, the F47xxx devices, including all future devices, have a 16MHz CPU for up to 16 MIPS performance. Combined with this CPU is a 32-bit hardware multiplier which allows intensive integer arithmetic without the need for a separate DSP computation engine and supports 8/16/24/32-bit operands, Unsigned/Signed multiply, and Unsigned/Signed multiply accumulate. The hardware multiplier peripheral is standalone and does not load CPU. Additional features include 4 SD16 ADCs for high precision measurement and USCI_A/B modules supporting SPI for utility Automatic Meter Reader (AMR), UART, and IR communication needs. With two USCI A&B modules it is possible to run up to four simultaneous SPI communication streams. Also, these devices incorporate pull-up/down resistors for all the 72 I/Os and have up to 60KB Flash and 2.5KB RAM for large data storage in applications such as smart energy meter (ideal for 3- or 2-phase energy meter measurement computation). The minimum voltage allowed for Flash programming/erasing on F47xx devices is reduced to 2.2V from 2.7V allowing designers to use smaller batteries and further reducing the power consumption of the system. Finally, the F47xx family of devices offers these many improvements, but shares the same CPU and instruction set as all MSP430’s meaning existing code can be completely reused.
