HDD to SSD Migration in Embedded Systems Slide 5

A key benefit to Solid Sate Drives over Hard Disk Drives is the availability of a variety of form factors and interfaces. Customized options are possible that are made to fit into space constrained systems. Additionally, by utilizing customized controller and firmware within the SSD, a designer can create a custom storage solution that suits the specific needs of their application. For example, cards can be defined as “read-only,” content can be protected, or users can customize their solution such that writing to a card can be limited or defined by a set number, such as “write-once, write-twice, or “x” number of times.” Event triggered write-protection is possible, as is making a card operate only in a certain device. Proprietary hardware formatting can make use of standards such as SD/MMC, ATA, or IDE working together with firmware essentially comprising a “disk-on-board” solution. Stringent requirements for qualification, tight quality control, and the need for longer life cycles are easily addressed with SSD solutions, giving the end application advantages over the design of their competitors.
