VIP Interface Modules Slide 3

VIP interface modules have many specific features, first of which is their compact size. VIP field termination assemblies are essentially limited in size by only the connection header placed on them. The patented “slice” design of the block allows the terminations to take up a minimal amount of space. For example, the 15-pin D-Sub module pictured here, could actually be smaller if the D-Sub connector was smaller. Instead a dummy, or “spacer” slice is used to make the module as wide as the D-Sub connector. The next feature is the markings on the modules. Improvements have been made from previous versions to both the I/O terminals, as well as the module itself. To begin, I/O terminals are now clearly marked on the top of the module, right below the screw. The older models featured I/O markings on the bottom of the module. As a result, the marking can not be seen if an installer is looking directly at the module while it is on the rail. Additionally, the VIP field termination assemblies have an integrated marking channel at the top of the module. Phoenix Contact ZB style markers are used for the VIP module, specifically ZB 5. This is very convenient since many Phoenix Contact products use ZB markers, including DIN rail terminal blocks. Moving on, the design of these modules allows it to be very effective in high vibration environments. A unique slice design not only saves space on the rail but also creates a much more rigid and robust module. Since there is a large amount of the board that is covered in plastic, there is very reliable connection. In addition, the design has also incorporated a metal DIN-rail foot, replacing two plastic feet used at each end of the previous version. These plastic feet made installation, and in particular, removal of the module from the rail very difficult. The metal DIN-foot alleviates those concerns as removal is simple using a flat screwdriver. Since the bottom of the module is flush with the DIN rail, the result is a very secure clamp. These two design features allow the module to achieve a 5G vibration rating. All versions of Phoenix Contact’s field termination assemblies, are UL508 recognized. This is a particularly important feature to keep in mind because it is unique to the market, Phoenix Contact is the only manufacturer that can make this statement. Finally, LED variants of the D-Sub, high density D-Sub, and ribbon cable field termination assemblies use LED indication for signal monitoring, while still having the same great features of the standard modules.
