The first version of the 802.11 protocol was released in 1997. Currently a typical IoT router will function with the B, G, and N protocols. Newer routers will use the AC protocol which can feature multiple input and output antennas and higher bandwidths but higher power consumption. In the next few years Panasonic expects to see more demand for the AX protocol which features even higher data rates than AC, up into the Gigabits per second (Gbps, Gb/s) speeds. BGN Wi-Fi operates at 2.4GHz where as AC operates in the 5GHz band. AX will operate in the bands between 1GHz and 7GHz as soon as they become available in addition to 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
