This slide captures transient test data collected using the Competitor A controller on the left and the Renesas digital multiphase controller solution to the right. To ensure accurate comparison of transient and thermal data, a purpose built development platform was created using the Renesas digital multiphase controller and accompanying Smart Power Stages with the exact layout, board stack up and BOM content. In this example, VIN = 12 V, VOUT = 1 V; both boards supported an exact output capacitance of 4000 µF, switching frequency of 500 kHz, and an applied load of 90 A at 50 A/µs slew rate. As is evident in the performance data collected, the Renesas solution supports a worst case 3% deviation for VOUT vs. 5% for the competing solution. Moreover, it should be noted that the zero latency associated with Renesas' control loop allows it to recover three times faster than the competing constant on-time solution from Competitor A.
