Summary

In summary, when making output voltage ripple measurements it is important to keep the VOUT to GND measurement loop as small as possible. Using a standard 10X probe is the quickest way to make a measurement. However, the large measurement loop created by the flying ground lead and the limited sensitivity of the 10X probe make this the least accurate approach. A better measurement technique is to use the ring and tip 10X probe. This yields better results than the standard 10X probe with flying ground lead. One of the best techniques to measure output voltage ripple is to utilize coax cable with 50 Ω termination. This technique will result in accurate and repeatable measurements which will allow the customer to ensure the switch-mode power supply output voltage ripple meets the requirements of the devices being powered.
