Where is GaN Found in Power Supplies?

As the name implies, switching power supplies employ switches to route currents through different paths in the power supply. Properly controlling the switches has enabled the design and manufacturing of compact, energy efficient and low-cost power supplies. Transistors are used in power supplies to act as the switches. Traditionally, silicon has been used to fabricate the switching transistors. Designing power supplies with GaN transistor switches instead of traditional silicon transistor switches allows the power supplies to operate at higher frequencies and with lower power losses. The higher switching frequencies and lower power losses enable GaN based power supplies to be smaller and lighter than silicon based power supplies.
