Reed Switch Basics Slide 11

Another common application for reed switches is measuring fluid levels. As seen in the illustration, a float containing a magnet is used to actuate the switches. When the magnet comes in close proximity to each switch, the blades close thus completing the circuit and causing the indicator light to come on. Conversely as the magnet moves away from the switch, the circuit is broken, by the switch blades opening, and the light goes out.
