What are CAT (Category) Safety Ratings in Multimeters? - Another Teaching Moment | DigiKey

Category Safety Ratings, or CAT ratings for short, are used to determine the correct multimeter required when measuring electrical equipment in specific situations or configurations. If you’ve ever used a multimeter or examined a datasheet for one, you’ve likely noticed a CAT safety rating. According to the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), multimeter manufacturers must follow specific safety testing guidelines to ensure each manufactured device meets or exceeds its stated rating. This video demonstrates the four, load type CAT level designations designed to protect end users from unintentional contact with electric energy which may result in serious injury or death.
